Glossary of Terms 

Certified Coffee: Organically grown coffee certified by an independent certifying agency.

Fair Trade Coffee: Coffee which has been traded and sold according to international fair trade criteria, including a guaranteed minimum price.

Family Farm: Generally refers to a farm of less than three hectares (7.5 acres).

Organic Coffee: Coffee grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers, and certified as such.

Shade Grown Coffee: Coffee trees grown under a partial to fully shaded forest canopy.

Sustainable: Coffee produced in a manner that ensures the sustainability of future generations. This term can apply to environmental, economic and/or social sustainability.
